It is reported that The Blessed Virgin Mary with Child Jesus appeared to a little boy at Vailankanni in the 16th Century. Devotion to Our Lady of Vailankanni is very popular in this place. It is estimated that lakhs of devotes from all over the world visit this place every year. This is especially during the novenas held from 29th August every year. The feast day culminates on the birthday of the Blessed Virgin Mary on 8th September.

The statue has is designed in elaborate golden decorations that are embedded onto the ivory coloured surface. The total height of the statue is 12 inches. The width is 5 inches and the thickness is two inches. It has a sturdy base that ensures that the statue remains stable when placed on an altar or on a table.
